“You’ll do fine, you know.” Enerenarie’s mother patted her leg gently. “And look, we’re coming out of the pass.”

The sides of the pass looked as if they had been cut out of the stone like a slice of cake. “The Pass of Kivvak, right? That was the Treaty of… well, it’s Kivvak’s treaty, but it was Empress Esennesanlie, right? That was the time the Bitrani got all the way up here and the Arrans…” She bit her lip. This was ancient history, back when the land was many different countries. “The Arrans were demanding more coast rights.”

“Very good, dear.” Her mother patted her again. “We’ll be there in less than a day.”
